We are all born creative, curious and hungry to explore the world around us as children. How do we keep those qualities alive and flourishing within us as adults? This is our goal in our Kick-In-The-Ass Creativity Class offered this June. For a child, creativity is expressed through the act of play. Life is just one big erector set! However, as adults, we often lose that wonderful flexibility and put away our toys as we acquire jobs and responsibilities. At our workshop, we think we can show you how you can retrieve that sense of wonder you had as a child. Unfortunately, we live in a culture that doesn’t exactly encourage adults to be creative or think outside of the box. Without imagination, we wouldn’t have great scientists, musicians, painters, sculptors, writers, architects, engineers, etc. The creative spirit within us is yearning to come out to play. It is our own personal voice that is determined to imprint our mark upon the universe, if we only let it.

” All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up.”

I just got back from a wonderful art show at Kiechel Fine Art in Lincoln, Nebraska. ”Layers and Lines” is featuring work by Judith Cherry, Karen Kunc and myself. Our work is very different, yet the pieces complimented eachother beautifully. Luminous color, shapes and patterns filled the space.

Lincoln, Nebraska is my hometown so it was a bittersweet experience. I love going home, especially in Spring. Everything was alive and budding, the smell of promise in the air. I always forget how beautiful the midwestern plains are…so fertile and green. Sandhill cranes flew overhead, squalking and calling to eachother, riding the thermals on their way to the Platte River, then North to mate and raise their young.

Please check out my bronze sculpture, “THE LANGUAGE OF RAVENS”, in my sculpture portfolio. Available work from the show is on the gallery website at GALLERY@KIECHELART.COM.

I’ve just finished a few new pieces for my three person show at Kiechel Fine Art in Lincoln, NE this coming March. I can’t say it’s been easy working in the studio…sometimes you have to really reach deep to find what you’re after. I keep digging and a lot of stuff is turning up! Much of my new work is inspired by loss, the cycles of nature and the passage of time.

I’m working on new pieces to take to a show at Kiechel Fine Art in Lincoln, Nebraska opening March 23rd, 2012.

Much of my work is inspired by the passage of time, cycles of nature and of course, trees. I’m still interested in exploring the tree series and have been taking them in some interesting directions. One of the pieces for the show features a large, winding, twisted tree climbing to the sky. Instead of my usual gold leaf or metal, I’ve painted the inside of the tree in a symbolic story of memories. A woman stands underneath the tree, reaching up toward a leaf. The sky is full of stars.

Stay tuned for some photos of this and other pieces I’m working on!

I’m really enjoying experimenting with materials lately. I’ve never been a big fan of acrylic paints, but I’m finding you can do so much with them!! I love laying in a wash and then wiping it out, leaving a beautiful residue stain. Also, while the piece is laying flat, try painting an opaque layer, then while it’s wet, dripping and spattering water on it. After a few minutes, use a flat brush to lightly pick up the areas where the water settled. It produces an amazing effect. Refer to the bottom of my piece, “The Lake”.

Please check out “The Lake” and my other abstract pieces in my portfolio.
